The Faxed vs. Emailed Resume

Image If you are still faxing your resume to potential employers... then you are truly missing the boat! Companies are moving towards a web based or resume parsing system. You ask... what the heck does that mean! Well, let me indulge you. First you have to understand that for every publicly listed job that you respond to, you have to figure perhaps another 100 persons do the same. That number can be exaggerated or generous depending on the size of the company, pay rate and the location of the job. Now take that single position and multiply it by 20 to get an idea of what many resumes mid to large size companies have to contend with every month.

The year is nearly 2008 and the Internet is alive and kicking. The cost to effectively implement an efficient strategy to meet the onging recruiting demands has become affordable and most importantly... needed! The problem with faxing your resume to companies who now rely on a computerized means to accept, sort, identify and automatically place your resume into a database is… you may not ever get into the database. You will end up in the “I will manually enter these resumes into the system” pile. I don’t know if you ever worked in a Human Resources Department or Recruiting Firm but, I would say that probably 1 out of 100 resumes get manually entered in to the system. Not because we don’t care, but time is better spent locating the “right” individual for a position, especially after you have invested big bucks into a system that works for you.

The bottom line… I can receive, view, archive and distribute your resume to hiring managers and decision makers without ever getting my rear end out of my chair. The best part of it all is that when you least expect it someone calls you with an opportunity you can’t refuse and you ask… “I don’t remember sending you my resume”, and they respond “you were in our database from a year ago”.

It’s simple:

FAXED RESUME = Dusty pile of papers no one ever gets around to viewing (but they can’t find it in their heart to file 13 them).
WEB BASED or EMAILED RESUME – Easily indexed and filed for future opportunities (kind of like a Twinkie with a 10 year shelf life).
